SCHOLARSHIPS

1) The Ron Brown Scholarship Program awards $40,000 ($10,000 per year) scholarships to academically talented, highly motivated African American students.  The scholarship committee places strong emphasis on academic achievement and community service.  Students must be US citizens or permanent residents.  The scholarship may only be used at four-year colleges and universities in the US.  There are two deadline dates; November 1 and January 9.  Ask you counselor for more details. 

 2) The Sam Walton COMMUNITY Scholarship (deadline 1/14/08) is a non-renewable $1,000 award for the student’s first year of undergraduate study at an approved accredited college or university.  Applications are available online only at www.walmartfoundation.org The selection of winners is based on financial need, academic records, standardized test results (ACT, SAT), extracurricular activities, community involvement, work experience, and timely and accurate completion of the Scholarship Competition application. 

3) The Skidmore College Department of Music is awarding a four-year scholarship ($10,000 each year) through their Filene Foundation Music Competition.  You must attend Skidmore College and complete your admission application by 1/15/08.  You may visit www.skidmore.edu/filenescholarship to enter.  The deadline is 1/15/08.

4)  The NY Water Environment Association has a $1,500 scholarship (deadline 1/23/08).  You must be a NYS resident, attend a 4-year college or university and major in a program whose focus is environmental issues.  See Ms. Goss for more details.

 5) The National Association of Asian American Professionals College Scholarship (deadline 1/31/08) has 4 one-time scholarships of $2,500.  Applicants will be evaluated based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community services.  You must be a US citizen or permanent resident.  Applications can be downloaded at http://www.naaapny.org/doc/sl.jspSee your counselor for more details. 

6) The Harlem YMCA is inviting participants for their national Salute to Black Achievers in Industry “Corporate Scholarship Program” (deadline 1/31/08).  Winners will be recognized at the 38th Annual Awards Dinner and be offered a scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $2,500.  You must write two essays and submit additional supporting documentation.  Please see your counselor for details. 

 7) The Columbus Citizens Foundation offers scholarships to students of Italian-American heritage based on academic excellence, financial need, service to the community and pride of ethnicity.  If you have at least an 85 average and are of Italian descent, you may submit an application.  The deadline is 2/1/08.  Download an application at www.columbuscitizensfd.org

8)  The National Commission for Cooperative Education is sponsoring The National Co-op Scholarship Program (deadline 2/15/08).  They are offering 185 merit co-op scholarships to students who have a B+ or better.  You must write an essay as part of the application.  See your counselor for more information.

 9)  The Ronald McDonald House Charities is offering scholarships to students from communities who face limited access to educational opportunities.  You must attend a two- or four-year college or university in the fall of 2008 and submit the completed application with supporting documentation.  The deadline is 2/15/08. 

 10) The AXA Achievement Scholarship (deadline 2/15/08) awards up to $15,000 in scholarships to students who show ambition and drive; determination to set and reach goals; respect for self, family and community; and the ability to succeed in college.  Visit www.axa-achievement.com for details.

 11)  KFC is looking for outstanding seniors with financial need to qualify for the Colonel’s Scholars program.  You must enroll in a 4-year SUNY or CUNY school, be a US citizen or permanent resident and maintain a 2.75 GPA.  The online application will be available from January 1 to February 15.  Go to www.kfcscholars.org to apply. 

 12)  The Dorothea Deitz Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to selected women who plan to major in Physical Education Teacher Education.  The deadline for submission is 3/1/08.  Visit http://nysahperd.org/deitz_scholarship.htm for an application and further information or see your counselor if you plan on majoring in Physical Education.

 13) Discover Colleges provides a free private college information service as well as a $2,500 private college scholarship drawing.  Log onto www.discovercolleges.com to be entered for the drawing.

 14)  AES Engineers is offering a $500 scholarship (deadline 9/15/08).  Students must submit an essay of no more than 1000 words in answer to one of these two questions:

·         What do you consider to be the single most important problem that is facing society today? Why?

·         Why are you a good candidate to receive this award?

You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible.  Visit http://www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.php to apply.
