What are Advanced Placement Courses?

The College Board Advanced Placement Program consists of college level courses and exams in various subject areas designed for highly motivated students in secondary schools. Its exceptional reputation is made possible by the close cooperation of secondary schools, colleges, and the College Board. 

More than 2,900 universities and colleges worldwide grant credit, advanced placement or both to students who have performed satisfactorily on the exams, and approximately 1,400 institutions grant sophomore standing to students who have demonstrated competency in three or more of these exams.    

Cathedral High School offers Advanced Placement Courses in the following subject areas: 

Biology    English    Calculus     Physics       Psychology     Spanish    US History

Fees 

There is a fee of approximately $82 for each AP exam taken

AP Biology

The Advanced Placement Program in a cooperative education endeavor with the College Entrance Examination Board. A course in Advanced Placement Biology is designed to provide able and highly motivated students with an opportunity to pursue college-level biological studies while still in high school. Candidates for this course must have successfully completed courses in Regents Biology and Chemistry. There is a strong emphasis on laboratory work both structured and of an original nature, designed by the students themselves. Many colleges will grant credit and appropriate placement to students who do well in the examination. This special examination will be given in May, and a fee is required by the College Entrance Board.

PREREQUISITE:        Regents grades of 85% or above in Biology and Chemistry and department approval

AP English

The Advanced Placement Program is a cooperative education endeavor with the College Entrance Examination Board. A course in Advanced Placement English is designed for the student who has demonstrated sophisticated critical thinking, the ability to express herself through the spoken and written word, and has an outstanding command of all English skills. To develop these skills further, the course emphasizes vocabulary study, reading comprehension, composition writing, term paper techniques, and library analysis. Many colleges will grant credit and appropriate placement to students who do well in the examination. This special examination will be given in May and a fee is required by the College Entrance Board.  

PREREQUISITE:           A mark of 90 in the Regents and/or approval of the department chairperson.

AP Calculus AB

A year course for students currently taking PreCalculus who have the recommendation of their present math teacher.  Students taking this course will take the A. P. Calculus AB exam in May provided they pay the fee required by the College Entrance Board.  Many colleges will grant credit and appropriate placement to students who do well in the examination.

PREREQUISITE:     A mark of  85% on the Math B exam

AP Physics

The Advanced Placement Physics B course includes topics in both classical and modern physics.  Five general areas of physics are covered:  Newtonian mechanics, fluid mechanics and thermal physics, electricity and magnetism, waves and optics, and atomic nuclear physics.  Knowledge of algebra and basic trigonometry is required.  The basic ideas of calculus may be introduced in connection with physical concepts, such as acceleration and work.  Understanding of the basic principles involved and the ability to apply these principles in the solution of the problems will be the major goals of the course.

PREREQUISITE:     A mark of  85% or higher:  Living Environment Regents, Chemistry Regents, Physics Regents.  Approval must be obtained from the chairperson.

AP Psychology

The Advanced Placement Program is designed for students who have shown through their written and oral abilities that they are capable of using their creative skills, understanding the more complex principles of psychology, and are willing and able to work independently.  Many colleges will grant credit and appropriate placement to students who do well in the examination.

        PREREQUISITE:     Open to a limited number of seniors with the approval of the social studies department chairperson.

AP Spanish

The Advanced Placement Program is a cooperative educational endeavor with the College Entrance Examination Board. A course will he offered in Advanced Placement Spanish for those who wish to pursue college level studies in Spanish Language and literature. Many colleges will grant credit and appropriate placement to students who do well in the examination(s). This special examination(s) will be given in May for those who wish to participate and pay the fee required by the College Entrance Board. This course will be intensive in both language and literature to prepare the students for the examination(s).

PREREQUISITE:     A mark of 90% in the Regents and/or approval of the department chairperson.

AP US History

The Advanced Placement Program is a cooperative education endeavor with the College Entrance Examination Board. A course in Advanced Placement United States History and Government is designed for students who have shown through their written and oral abilities that they are capable of using their creative skills, understanding social studies terminology, and are willing and able to work independently. Many colleges will grant credit and appropriate placement to students who do well in the examination. This special examination will be given in May and a fee is required by the College Entrance Board.

PREREQUISITE:    90% average in Global History II Regents and  the  approval of the department chairperson
