ELEMENTS OF MUSIC
– Grades 10-11-12
This one-semester course will introduce
the elements of music, fundamentals of music theory and briefly survey the
history of Western European art music. Emphasis will be placed on the
development of critical listening and analytical skills. The completion of this
class grants ˝ credit to the Fine Arts requirement for graduation.

CHORUS

Chorus
is a full-year elective class meeting during the school day for credit.
The focus of the class is on developing the individual’s vocal
technique, as well as preparing choral music for group presentation in concert.
The goal is quality performance. This
class satisfies the Fine Arts requirement for graduation. Approval for
this course must be obtained from Mr. Puntel.
HISTORY OF ROCK
MUSIC (1/2 Credit) – One Semester – Grades: 10-11-12
This course is a musical and cultural study of the roots, development,
and influence of rock music. It explores the genesis of early rock and roll in
gospel, the blues, country music, and popular song in the 1950s and provides a
variety of critical and technical perspectives on the development of the art
form in its many genres, styles, and
personalities from the 1960s until today.
Listening, research, and writing skills are emphasized.
PREREQUISITE: None
MUSIC AND
TECHNOLOGY (l/2 Credit) – One Semester – Grades: 10-11-12
The course is a hands-on introduction to the art and technique of sound
reinforcement and recording, MIDI production, synthesis, and performance. It
offers exposure to careers in music technology, a rapidly expanding professional
field.
PREREQUISITE: At least one
semester of Music Survey, Chorus, or Band
HISTORY OF JAZZ
(1/2 Credit) - One Semester - Grades:
10-11-12
This course explains jazz, its
development, and how to be an effective listener. Class members learn how
to follow song form, understand the uses of ensemble and soloist in a jazz
performance, and explore the significant events in the music's history.
Students will study the social, cultural, technical and aesthetic history of
this major American musical genre and come to understand the political, social
and commercial impact that an artistic movement can have.
MARCHING
BAND
Band
meets after school. One credit is granted for the satisfactory completion of one
year in band. This credit will fulfill the State music requirement. Students are
expected to participate in all parades and functions of the band. Students will
be taught the instrument of their choice: Drum, glocks, fifes, or brass
instrument.
PREREQUISITE: Approval of the band director or band moderator.
No
previous knowledge of an instrument is required.
