FRESHMEN
The
first year of the language introduces the student to the culture of the people
speaking the target language. Students learn the correct pronunciation, basic
vocabulary, and elementary grammatical constructions. This is to enable the
students to understand simple questions and respond intelligently.
SPANISH
1-2 NON-NATIVE
This
course is for those students who have no knowledge or only a little of Spanish
and wish to learn the language.
SPANISH
1-2 NATIVE
This
course is for students who have some background or knowledge
of the Spanish language. This course will involve stress on common errors in
pronunciation, vocabulary and writing as needed. These students will continue in
special Native courses in sophomore and junior years.
FRENCH
1-2
Students
will learn the correct pronunciation, basic vocabulary and elementary
grammatical constructions in French.
SOPHOMORES
All foreign language courses
must be approved by your language teacher. Every sophomore is expected to
continue with the language she started in freshman year unless her present
language teacher recommends otherwise. Spanish and French are offered to
sophomores, but a student must first successfully complete the current course in
order to advance to the next one.
SPANISH 3-4 NON-NATIVE —
a continuation for
those
who have
successfully completed SPANISH 1-2 NN.
SPANISH
3-4 NATIVE—
a continuation for
those who have successfully completed SPANISH 1-2 N. Those who achieve 95
percent or above may take the Spanish Regents at the end of this course with the
approval of the teacher and chairperson. They must, however, continue
studying Spanish by enrolling in the Spanish L-A-M course for next year.
FRENCH 3-4
— a continuation for those who have
successfully completed FRENCH 1-2
JUNIORS
Students
in JUNIOR YEAR may begin a new language PROVIDED they continue in their present
language. However, a student’s request for a second language will be satisfied
depending upon openings in the particular course. Approval to begin a language
must be obtained from the chairperson of the department. Seniors may not begin a
new language. The third year of language study offers greater facility in
speaking, reading and fundamentals of writing the target language. Regents are
offered at the completion of each of these courses
SPANISH
5-6 NON-NATIVE — for those
students who have successfully completed Spanish 3-4 NN. Regents are offered at
the end of this course.
SPANISH
5-6 NATIVE — for those students
who have successfully completed Spanish
3-4 N. Regents are offered at the end of this course.
FRENCH
5-6 —for those students who have
successfully completed French 3-4. Regents are offered at the end of this
course.
SPANISH
L-A-M - JUNIORS AND SENIORS
Full-year
course. Offers an introduction to literature, art and music in Spanish
culture. It also provides a basis for Spanish Advanced Placement.
THIS CLASS IS TAUGHT ENTIRELY IN SPANISH.
PREREQUISITE:
Successful completion of third-year Spanish and a grade of at least
85% on the Spanish Regents exam.
SENIORS
ADVANCED
PLACEMENT SPANISH - SENIORS
The
Advanced Placement Program is a cooperative educational endeavor with the
College Entrance Examination Board. A course will he offered in
Advanced Placement Spanish for those who wish to pursue college level
studies in Spanish language and
literature. Many colleges will grant credit and appropriate placement to
students who do well in the examination(s). This special examination(s) will be
given in May for those who wish to participate and pay
the fee required by the College Entrance Board. This course will be
intensive in both language and literature to prepare the students for the
examination(s). THIS CLASS IS TAUGHT ENTIRELY IN SPANISH.
PREREQUISITE:
A mark of 90% in the Regents and/or approval of the department chairperson.
FEE: Approximately $82 for each examination
FRENCH L-A-M LITERATURE, ART AND MUSIC
This course makes the connection between the language learned in
previous French classes and the cultures of various French-speaking countries.
The students will further examine such cultures through their literature, art
and music. Writing done in the course reinforces the grammar points
learned in previous courses.
PREREQUISITE: A grade of 85% in French
5-6 and on the French Regents exam
