Business and Information Technology Department

Mission Statement:  To equip students with those skills essential for success in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.

INTRODUCTION TO OCCUPATIONS  Grade Level: 10-11-12 - Semester Course
This course
takes the student beyond knowledge and technical skills to the development of qualities, skills, and special factors that are related to job success. Students will build transferable skills that will enable them to not merely survive but to actually thrive in today’s economic arena. Career search programs that include interest inventories will be used to research career possibilities.

TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION I Grade Level:  10-11-12 - Semester Course
This course is your key to learning the secrets of lightning-speed touch typing, as well as tips to "jazz up" the style of your letters, office skills, book reports, introduction to desktop publishing, and research papers.  Learn the applications and skills that many of our former students used to get the jobs that paid more than minimum wage.  Using Microsoft Word, Mavis Beacon, Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Internet Explorer, you will prepare now for that part-time job as well as all those future high school and college papers.

TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION II - Grade Level:  10-11-12 - Semester Course
Building upon the skills learned in TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION I, students will continue to sharpen their computer skills (typing, researching, and using the internet) while expressing their individuality in multimedia fashion.  This semester course culminates in students producing their own professional-looking slide presentations and designing personalized greeting cards, business cards, newsletters, and brochures.  The curriculum centers on the basics of desktop publishing and layout techniques using Microsoft Word, Publisher, and PowerPoint.

MICROSOFT EXCEL AND ACCESS  --  Grade Level: 11-12-Semester Course
In this hands-on course, students will organize their phone books, finances, and CD collections using the popular Microsoft Excel and Access applications.  Once students learn to enter, edit, and sort information, they will set up no-fuss formulas that automatically recalculate at the touch of a button.  Finally, they will present their data in various formats, including spreadsheets, databases, and computer-generated pie charts and graphs.

WEB DEVELOPMENTGrade Level:  11-12 - Semester Course
Do you ever get tired of the limited resources available to create a web page?  In this year-long course, students will use Macromedia Dreamweaver, professional web development software, to learn the skills necessary to create an attractive and meaningful website.  Students will experiment with various layout tools and complete projects on a variety of topics.  Of course, this will culminate with each student creating a user-friendly and eye-catching website that will be published on the World Wide Web for all internet users to see.

GRAPHIC DESIGN I - Grade Level: 11-12 - Full-year Course
Introduction to Computer Graphics--This course will introduce students to the basics of design concepts and the Window-based applications that support them on a PC:  Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator software.  Students will retouch photos, design logos, create newsletters.  Emphasis on using images and type to communicate visual concepts and teaches hands-on computer skills and techniques.  This course fulfills the State Fine Arts requirement.
         PREREQUISITE:  None

GRAPHIC DESIGN II - Grade Level: 12 - Full-year Course
Graphic Design Year 2 incorporates the knowledge learned in Graphic Design Year I and the software taught Adobe's Photoshop, Illustrator, Image Ready, and In Design and advances it into motion graphics through Adobe's After Effects software as well as the Corel Design Suite of graphic design software.  The students will learn motion graphics similar to the ones seen in opening credits in movies or DVD menus.  This course fulfills the State Fine Arts requirement.

Graphic Design Year I

INTERNSHIPS/PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Grade Level: 11-12 - Semester Course
In this one-semester course, students will have the opportunity to learn from business leaders and gain the experience and skills necessary to be successful in the technological marketplace.  They will work one day a week in law offices, courts, corporate legal departments, and investment management firms in a mentorship capacity.  In school there will be practice-specific computer software programs.  Students will learn group interaction as well as presentation skills.  There will be guest speakers, and students will be responsible to keep journals.
        
PREREQUISITE:   An overall average of 80% or above
                                            Good attendance record
                                            Approval of chairperson

LITIGATION—TRIAL PROCESS AND PROCEDURES - Grade Level: 11-12 - Semester Course
Students will become familiar with all states of  the litigation process—trial  preparation, rules of evidence, trial and appeal procedures as they study the structure of the court system and the methods and procedures employed in litigation.  Computer software will be used for research. A mock trial competition will be held with other schools in the Federal Court.

CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAW  -  Grade Level: 11-12 - Semester Course
This course does three things:  first, it can focus you in meaningful career directions; second, you will learn about your legal rights; third, you learn how your rights function in the larger societal picture. Your knowledge of law—either business or criminal law—will develop both respect and an understanding of how if affects you, your family, and your career. As a result of knowing both your rights and obligations, you will know how to avoid legal complications and when you need to obtain legal assistance. Guest speakers, visits to criminal and civil courts will extend your understanding and knowledge.
           
PREREQUISITE:  None.
  Limited internships are available based on an interview
