Cathedral High School
Celebrating 100 Years
of Excellence! |
Cathedral students demonstrate their love of learning through their
interest in extracurricular programs as well as through the recognition and awards they receive.
Below are some highlights from the 2004 - 2005 school year!
Our Student Council officers were busy this
year raising funds for various charities:
-
"Cap Day”, in which the students donated
$1 in order to wear a cap to school
for the
day raised $500
for Juvenile Cancer Research.
- Our Thanksgiving Food Drive to a tremendous success as we collected over
3,000
non-perishable food items that were donated to the needy.

- Our Annual Technology
Walk-a-thon raised more than $20,000 for new laptops,
white boards, and computer software.
-
“Toys for tots” netted 12 large cartons of new toys and stuffed animals
for
underprivileged children in our city. The U.S. Marines were extremely
grateful
for
our contribution to their drive.
- The generous nature of our girls and faculty
came shining through as we donated
$1,475 to the American Red Cross for
their relief efforts for the victims of the Tsunami.
Again, our girls showed that they are young women of
compassion, competence and
conscience as they share what they have with
others.
On
September 16, 2004, Cathedral High School had the wonderful opportunity of
hosting a visiting German Band. The Schulerblasorchester Band from St.
Ottillien School in Landsberg am Lech Germany. Together with Cathedral’s
own all girl marching band, they played beautifully as they performed for
all students and faculty. Both bands went on to perform at the Steuben Day
Parade on 5th Avenue.

Congratulations once again to the Cathedral
High School Marching Band for winning First Place at the New York City
St. Patrick's Day Parade, March 17, 2005. We also congratulate
Mr. Haneman, Band Director and Sr. Eileen Regina, Band Moderator for their
hard work and dedication to our award winning band.
We congratulate the 14 members of our Model United Nations Club for an
extraordinary job at the annual
St. Peter's College High School Model United Nations Conference. Our
students represented the countries of Cuba and France and were rewarded for
their hard work with an award for Outstanding Delegation, Honorable Mention
Delegation Award and also Best Position Paper Award.
Congratulations to our graduating class of 2005 which to
date has earned over $10.5 million in college scholarships and grants and
acceptances to some of the nation's most prestigious colleges and universities.
Faculty Achievements
Congratulations to our
Biology teacher, Mr. Richard Ali, and his 9th grade Living Environment
students for successfully passing the regents exam with flying colors.
More amazing still is that because of Mr. Ali's accelerated curriculum, this
class completed a
year's worth of Regents material in only four months which included five
Saturday lessons for lab time. (Last April, Mr. Richard Ali received a Manhattan
Media Blackboard Awards for Outstanding Teachers and was featured in the
Our Town and West Side Spirit newspapers. )
We
are happy to announce that our Yearbook has been recognized by Taylor Publishing
Company with an Honorable Mention Award for their overall dedication, effort and
accomplishments. The CHS yearbook is featured in the 2005 Yearbook
Yearbook. Taylor publishing recognizes only the top 5 percent of yearbook
staff for outstanding yearbook achievement. We thank our English teacher and
Yearbook Club Moderator, Ms. Stacey Bergin for a job well done!

Congratulations to Ms. Zummo, Chair of the Math Department, for her
inclusion in the Ninth
Edition of Who’s Who Among American Teachers 2005.
Ms. Zummo was nominated by a former
student who herself has been cited
for academic excellence in Who’s Who Among American High School Students
and National Dean’s List. Last April, Ms. Zummo received honorable
mention as Outstanding Teacher in the 2004 Blackboard Awards featured in the
Our Town and West Side Spirit Newspapers. There is no greater reward
for teachers than to be valued by former students. Ms. Zummo was also
recognized by the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine for bringing honor
to her profession.
